Why the 'Just Work Harder' Mentality Isn't MY Answer for Business Growth
Oct 14, 2024I love following high-achieving entrepreneurs like Tony Robbins, Brendon Burchard, and Alex Hormozi. They’re brilliant individuals who continually expand my vision of what's possible in business. But there's one thing in their messaging that doesn’t resonate with me: the "just work harder" mentality.
Don't get me wrong, I understand the value of hard work. Big, amazing things often take longer and require more effort than we realize. But the “just grind harder” narrative helps people achieve at the expense of their health, happiness, and even their families. It reinforces the idea that if things aren’t working, the only solution is to DO / GRIND / HUSTLE more—a mentality that’s been deeply ingrained in our society since the industrial revolution.
And here’s the kicker: I see a lot of "hard workers" with no freedom, no joy, no money, and poor health because they never rest.
When your self-worth is linked to your productivity, guilt sets in whenever you take a break.
The Real Cost of Hustle Culture
Hustle culture might look inspiring on the surface, but let’s be honest—it’s exhausting. It creates an endless loop of doing more without ever stopping to ask, “Is this even working for me?” When you’re constantly running on empty, it’s hard to enjoy the success you’re chasing. You end up sacrificing your well-being for the sake of "getting ahead."
The truth is, building a business shouldn't feel like you're on a treadmill that you can’t step off of. It’s not about squeezing in more tasks or extending your work hours. It’s about creating a business model that works for you, not one that drains you.
Shifting the Approach: There's Another Way
In my humble opinion, there’s another way to reach your goals without sacrificing your well-being. It starts with redefining what success looks like for you and being willing to challenge the beliefs that have you thinking, “Rest is for the weak” or “I’m only valuable if I’m constantly producing.”
Instead of just “working harder,” why not focus on working smarter? Design a business that allows you to grow without burning out. Align your efforts with your natural strengths, streamline your processes, and make rest a non-negotiable part of your strategy.
What Does This Look Like in Practice?
Expanding into the version of you who can do, be, and have more does not mean just "working harder". It might mean having difficult conversations, setting boundaries, healing parts of yourself that resist rest, or daring to go beyond your comfort zone. It's about finding a rhythm that allows you to grow while also enjoying the life you're building.
